In this section, Steinbeck gives a portrait of crooks pain.I interviewed Crooks today.

Crooks lives in a room all by himself in a barn with tons of people. He is isolated from the whole farm. Crooks is a black man with a hunch back. He is isolated from his family and his mates. He’s not allowed in the white’s bunkhouse because of his color. He sleeps all alone reading books about his time and the dictionary. That’s pretty understandable since he talks all about his rights and what not. He told me times have been hard and they have changed since 1939. All the racist quotes and not letting him be allowed anywhere is atrocious. What this man has done for all his farm workers and what does he get nothing. So I am just telling you please leave your racist attitudes at home.
